Looney Tunes: Back in Action may soon be put out to pasture, as the film made a less-than-spectacular debut over the weekend. The feature animation/live-action mix opened in fifth place with $9.5 million, eclipsed by Brother Bear from arch-rival Disney, which in its third week in wide release grossed $12.0 million. On a per-screen basis, Brother Bear aced the Looney Tunes crew again, grossing $3,966 to Back in Action's $3,272.

The weekend was dominated by the performance of Will Ferrell's comedy Elf, which moved from the number two berth to number one with a weekend gross of $27.2 million, bringing the film's cumulative gross to $71.2 million.. That weekend performance represented a decline of only 12%, which was in marked contrast to the 66% plunge suffered by The Matrix Revolutions, which grossed $16.3 million (cumulative: $114.1 million). The other big opening was by Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, the Russell Crowe nautical epic that opened in second with $25.7 million.

ouch...so, I was on track, except for the fact that LT did NOT beat 'Brother Bear' (which is good for Disney) AND LT made a LOT less than I'd thought. oh well. I liked it enough.
